چکیده

In the unicellularly growing green alga Scenedesmus acutus, the formation of many-celled coenobia may be induced by an infochemical released by the grazer Daphnia magna. We used a standardized bioassay to obtain information about the release of the infochemical by actively feeding D.magna and its chemical nature. The infochemical could not be extracted from the alga or the grazer by aqueous or more lipophilic solvents. When the release of coenobia-inducing activity by actively feeding D.magna was investigated as a function of the individual’s body mass, no increase with increasing individual body mass was observed, indicating that the chemical cue originates from zooplankton’s non-digestive metabolism rather than from digestion of alga by the grazer. The infochemical released by D.magna can be characterized as an olefinic low-molecular-weight carboxylic acid. Hydroxy and amino groups can be excluded as moieties of the infochemical essential for biological activity. We present a method to concentrate the infochemical from Daphnia incubation water using lipophilic solid-phase extraction. Subsequent separation by reversed-phase HPLC yielded only one active fraction.

Costs and trade-offs of grazer-induced defenses in Scenedesmus under deficient resource

The green alga Scenedesmus obliquus can form inducible defensive morphs under grazing threat. Costs and trade-offs of inducible defense are expected to accompany the benefits of defensive morphs, but are hard to detect under nutrient-sufficient experimental conditions. To test the existence of costs associated with inducible defense, we cultured S. obliquus along resource availability gradients...

It is known that the zooplankter Daphnia induces colonies in the alga Scenedesmus. As Daphnia grazes on Scenedesmus, it has been postulated that colony formation represents an algal defense mechanism. This induction of Scenedesmus coenobia/colonies by Daphnia could be associated with a substance exuded by the animals that acts as a specific infochemical (kairomone) for Scenedesmus. However, the...

Grazer-induced morphological defense in Scenedesmus obliquus is affected by competition against Microcystis aeruginosa

The green alga Scenedesmus is known for its phenotypic plasticity in response to grazing risk. However, the benefits of colony formation induced by infochemicals from zooplankton should come with costs. That is, a tradeoff in benefit-to-cost ratios is likely under complex environmental conditions. In this study, we hypothesized that the coexistence of Scenedesmus and its competitors decreases t...

Chemical induction of colony formation in a green alga (Scenedesmus acutus) by grazers (Daphnia)

The green alga, Scenedesmus acutus, grows in culture in unicellular form, but it forms colonies (coenobia) when exposed for 48 h to a chemical released by the grazer Daphnia magna. The colony-forming response can be evoked only in growing cells. The Daphnia factor affects colony size but not algal growth rate. The minimum concentration of Daphnia factor that induces colony formation is equivale...

Growth and Morphological Changes in Scenedesmus dimorphus Induced by Substances Released from Grazers, Daphnia magna and Moina macrocopa

Some freshwater phytoplankton species are plastic in their morphology, physiological characteristics, genetic structure, and biochemical composition. These characteristics of planktonic algae vary considerably under different environmental conditions in aquatic ecosystems. Algae such as Staurastrum sometimes lose their spiny form, and large multi-f ilament ‘f lakes’ of Aphanizomenon grows as si...
